Can you capture sound from my 8mm, super 8, or 16mm film reels?

The majority of film is inherently silent. Anyone remember The Artist starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo? In some instances, 8mm, Super8, and 16mm film may contain a magnetic sound strip, right on the edge of the film. It's a light brown color, easily distinguishable from the rest of the film.

However, sound film is not something we receive very often. Silent film was a much more prevalent format, just because of the cost of the equipment involved. To complicate matters, of the small percentage of film reels that do have a sound strip, an even smaller percentage used the proper recording equipment required to capture both the sound and picture.

Because these instances are so rare, and to ensure we’re providing the highest quality transfers, it is not our standard process to digitize film with sound. However, if you’d like to speak with someone about this, feel free to contact our customer support team.
